電子ペーパー・ディスプレイ
Plastic Logic社が高松市で12月6日から開催されている「第12回 International Displays Workshop」で電子ペーパー・ディスプレイを紹介。
プラスチック上にトランジスタをプリントするという手法で製造されるこのディスプレイは厚さ0.4ミリ未満。画素数800×600ドットで100dpiの4階調グレースケール。100dpiだから見た目には新聞紙の印刷と比べても遜色ないレベルだと思われる。
紙に印刷したように見える電気泳動ディスプレイの材料 E Ink Imaging Film を使用しているので電力を消費するのは画像イメージを変更する時だけ。グレースケールの階調を上げていくことは技術的にさほど難しくないと言うことだし、圧力センサーをスクリーンの下に設置しディスプレイの光学性能を低下させること無くタッチスクリーンを実装することもできるとのこと。
Plastic Logicは今年10月にDoCoMoとの共同開発に合意していて、移動体通信のユーザーインターフェイスが劇的に変わることも期待できるね。
ｉ-ModeケータイとBlueTooth接続された電子ペーパーが毎日の新聞を運んでくるなんてこともありえるかも。
